Side Kick

Side Kick1

The Side Kick is one of four Nia kicks that draw upon the marital arts for inspiration. As you practice, key into a four part aciton: PREPARE by drawing thigbone UP, heel draws IN to buttock, kick OUT to siide with heel keeping the outer thighbone facing the sky, and release foot DOWN to floor. Think: UP, OUT, IN, DOWN.  Keep standing leg "spring-loaded", directing your attention simultaneously out toward your target and on your standing leg directing energy down.

As you gain movement skill and balance, play with different heights, speeds, range of motions, energies and combinations. Continue below for Tip and Video!

Tip:  Start with your level one - a small range of motion - then play with increasing. To kick higher, turn the foot of your standing leg "toes out" to tap into the mobility of your hip joint.  Tune into and direct your tailbone to the side that you are kicking to. Kick through the heel (not with your toes pointed). Think and sound "side" as you kick.
